A dog house is an easy way to make money if you love dogs, but it is not among the most profitable. A dog house is not like a swimming pool or a hot tub--it's an enclosed structure that keeps the dog warm. It's also very handy for bringing your dog to the vet or taking him to the beach.

If you have ever had an outdoor kennel, you know that outdoor kennels are expensive and hard to maintain. That's because they need snow cover and enough insulation to keep your dog warm through several months of winter. If you live in Washington, DC, however, there are only about three months of winter each year--around November through March. If you live in New England you can get by with less insulation by using a smaller kennel during the milder months. And if your dog doesn't mind being outdoors at all, he will probably prefer an open-air kennel. It is much harder to find an indoor design that works for all dogs, especially larger breeds that love to dig, since it is hard to find a cheap way to make a small building that would be comfortable for an 80-pound St Bernard.

An indoor kennel is different from an outdoor one in another way: it has heat-trapping insulation on all four sides. The walls are insulated with fiberglass or some other material designed to stop heat escaping from behind rather than letting it leak out of the sides or floor of the enclosure. This makes wrapping yourself in multiple layers of fleece even more important than usual if you're going to spend time in an indoor kennel--and remember that dogs have neck muscles just as humans do, so don't forget to wear a scarf or neck warmer underneath your coat!
